Healthy Quinoa Chicken Salad

Hi friends! One of my favorite things to make year round is chicken salad. Recently while making some there was some left over quinoa in the fridge and I though, ‘why not.’ So I added some into the mixture and it made the flavor even better! I decided to share my chicken salad recipe with you all as well. Hope you think it is as delicious as I do!Chicken Salad

Ingredients

2 Cans of Chicken

1 Cup of Quinoa

2 Stalks of Celery

2 Carrots

1 Onion

1 Apple

1 Tablespoon of Garlic

1 Small handful of Cranberries

1/2 Cup of Low Fat Mayonnaise

1/4 Cup of Relish

1 Teaspoon of Mustard

Directions

Step 1: Put one cup of quinoa in a medium sized bowl.

IMG_6123Step 2: Finely chop the carrots, celery, onion, apple and cranberries. Once chopped add them to the bowl.

I like using the apple and cranberries for a dash of sweet flavor since the other vegetables are strong in their flavor and it compliments the quinoa.

Step 3: Open the cans of chicken with a can opener. Drain the juice from the chicken and then finely chop. below is what the ckicken should look like once chopped.

IMG_6136Step 4: Add the chopped chicken to the other ingredients in the bowl.

Step 5: Add the condiments to the other ingredients to the bowl.

Step 6: Mix all of the ingredients together.

Once made, let the chicken salad sit in the fridge for 30 minutes to help the mixture ‘gel’ and become even more delicious!!

Biker Barre

Hi friends,

Today I am going to write about my newest obsession: Biker Barre!

Since I had my first class at the end of January I have been more and more obsessed with attending as many classes as I can. Which ended up being almost twice a day in February!

Biker Barre is like my own oassis where I can go to workout and zone in on the workout at hand. It is so much fun to meet new people in the area and get a workout at the same time. There are so many great people that go and all uplift each other for success in the classes.

Biker Barre is unique in that they have two types of classes available.

Bike 

Before Biker Barre I had never done a cycling class and boy was I surprised when I did my firs one here. It was exhilarating!! At the beginning of class they turn all the lights out and you can only see dimly all around you. This is the best because it really allows you to focus on yourself and your workout instead of who is around you and how they are working out. Once the lights go out the instructor gives you a quick hello and maybe a little spurt of inspiration for the class and you are on your way!! There is loud music pumping all around you which pushes you to follow the temp of the beat and intensity for the workout. After 45-50 minutes of pushing yourself to the limit the workout is over and you feel like you can take on anything. Even if my muscles were tired or I was out of breath I left feeling so happy and ready to do even more!

Barre

Barre is a total body workout for all of your muscles. Before going I don’t think I barely had gluten…but now I do!! I love the airy atmosphere of the barre studio and how nice and approachable the instructors are. As a newbie I did not really know what barre was and the correct poses and the instructors were always kind in pushing me to go farther and correct my form. Each class is designed to work a full range of muscles with small pulsing movements of your body. It is an interesting concept that always leaves me sore and wanting to come back again!!

Pros and Cons of Biker Barre 

Pros:

  • Accessibility–The location of Biker Barre is perfect. Not only is it near a metro, Capitol Hill and shops but the interstate is right there as well. It can easily be a place that people go to after work for a great workout..even if they live in VA or MD.
  • App–One of my favorite things about Biker Barre is their user friendly app. At any time in the day I can look onto the app and see what classes are being taught, by who and even sign up there on the spot. With being on my phone, like so many others, so much this is a great feature to the business!
  • Instructors–There is a wide variety of instructors for each class that you might want to take. I love this because I was always going to a different class to learn from a different instructor and therefore did the same types of workout but with different positions and etc. It really kept me interested in coming back and seeing what new things I could learn all at one place.
  • New Equipment–Since going this last month I have already seen and used new equipment that Biker Barre has purchased for the clients. It is awesome to know that they really put money into their business for the benefit of their clients. Specifically, the new bikes are top notch!!
  • Cleanliness--I love that no matter what time I have been it has always been really tidy and clean. This was really important to me when finding a good place to work out.
  • Towel at the End–At the end of each class you get a cold scented towel that is literally divine! It feels SO good after a hard workout to wipe off a layer of sweat and go onto the next thing in your day.
  • FREE Mimosas on the Weekends–Who doesn’t love a little p[ickl me up mimosa after a hard workout!?

Cons:

  • Size— The only con I have is that I wish Biker Barre was bigger!! It is the perfect workout combo and I know once more people come to this little gem in DC it will be harder to get into every class you want. But hey, that just means they need a second one!! 😉

New Workout Clothes for Motivation

New Workout Clothes

More than anything else one of my biggest motivations in working out is to wear cute, fun clothes while doing it! Lately, I have been collecting some new workout clothes that are fun and different to wear. It has definately helped push me to get to the gym and feel good about myself. It is always fun to get a new outfit but there is something even better about getting a new workout outfit.

Here is one of my favorite new outfits!

Whenever I really wanna push myself at a workout or just wear something nice as a pick me up I am always wearing these ‘space inspired’ pants! They are so much fun!!

Recently, when going to Dick’s Sporting goods they were having a huge sale and I was so excited to get some new undershirts to workout with. I love these because they are stretchy, tight (aka hold all the fluff in) and collect all my sweat.

Anything Lululemon = amazing…am I right!? Having some new items from there has definitely motivated me to wear them to go workout and look cute too!

I am loving these headbands lately! They are the best at keeping the flyways away from my face when working out.

Last, but not least, I recently got this neck warmer on super clearance at Gap for only $6 dollars! It is great for wearing around my neck and even up to my nose in the chilly, winter weather when going on a run and etc.

It is my 23rd Birthday and my first anniversary of my blog all TODAY!

Today I started off the day doing something I have NEVER done before; going to a 6am spin class!! This year I am making it a goal to lose at least 30 more pounds in an effort to be healthy and fit.

As I am now, I am healthier that I was last year, but I still need to lose some of the weight on my frame to get into the right area for my body type. Unlike last year, I am excited about this journey and look forward to doing all I can to push myself and become fit, gain muscle, and confidence in my fitness abilities.

This afternoon I got all dressed up and went out to eat with coworkers! It was so much fun to laugh and see them. Below are pics of my ‘Outfit of the Day’.

Blogiversary

I cannot believe how fast this year has flown by and how much my little blog has grown There have been so many ups and downs but I am so happy with the place I am at in my life and the opportunities and new adventures to come in 2015!!

Losing weight is hard. Period.

Without motivation and dedication losing weight is almost impossible. As Paul and I have been losing weight one of our biggest struggles is to stay dedicated every day. We have found that it is hard to stick to eating healthy every day, day after day…especially after a cheat meal or a weekend when we are not at home and out of our routine.

Through time we have learned how important it is to stick to our routine and if we fall off for a day or two to just pick back off where we left off and keep fighting for the end goal. It is not all about losing weight but creating a healthy lifestyle for ourselves and our future little ones. We are motivated and dedicated through our routine that we have created.

The best advice I was given by a friend has been: If you don’t plan then you are planning to fail!

Meal planning is the number one priority we have going into every week. It is is so helpful to go into the week knowing what we will be eating all week and to already have it prepared.Every Sunday we prepare our meals for the week. This has been the most helpful thing at keeping us on track!

Seeing our progress though pictures is a huge motivator for us! Here are some pictures of Paul and I in the past year through our weightloss journey.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

This past weekend I did something I have never done before! I went with my husband and in laws to my very first Nascar race!

Nascar has never been my thing but my husband, Paul, loves the races. In the past I’ve been to smaller type races in his hometown but nothing this big.  I did not expect to enjoy it but it was actually very exciting! As the race went on I was focused, cheering and enthusiastic about who was going to win. ….All of which surprised my husband!

It was freeing to step out of my comfort zone. My attitude has a lot to do with holding me back when trying new experiences. Having a preconceived notion stops me from trying new things. This is a character trait I am trying to break. There are too many opportunities in the area I live and our country to keep myself from trying new experiences!

Overall the weekend was so much fun and opened my eyes to how I was holding back in other areas of my life.

Moving forward, I want to have and open mind to try new things. To do this I am starting a ‘bucket list’ of sorts. It will be filled with things that I am apprehensive to try but will be trying now to step out of my comfort zone.

The first thing on my list is Yoga. I have never tried it and I have always just assumed I would not be good at it. Not anymore! I want to try my first class with an open mind. Who knows I might be able to bend my body in what seems impossibly hard ways and enjoy it!! 😉

Jrink 3 Day Juice Cleanse

I have been in a serious rut lately! I posted here about amping up my health and fitness with new recipes. I have done so, marginally. But in an effort to do a complete turn around and eat as healthy, unprocessed, and clean as I can I am doing a juice cleanse. This is my very first juice cleanse and I am really excited!

What is it!?

After talking with my doctor, I decided a juice cleanse would be a great reset for my body to recharge me and help implement some long term changes. I decided to order from Jrink because they are local and their juices are delicious!! (And the bottles look so cool)

<–I had my first one this past Saturday  and I have been craving for one ever since!!

I am doing the 3 Day Reboot cleanse that is made up of 18 juices. I will drink 6 juices a day for 3 days. It is that simple!

3 Day Juice Cleanse

Before

To get ready for the cleanse I did three days of eating Vegetarian. I also did not drink anything but water and had no bread or dairy. Not drinking soda was very hard. I am somewhat of a diet Coke addict and I can already feel the effects of not having caffeine for almost 4 days.

Once completing the cleanse I will do the same thing as before. I will slowly add back in dairy and bread. But I am trying to see how long I can go without soda. This is a hard thing for me but I know that the aspartame and high volumes of salt in it, among other things, are not good for me.

Long Term

In the long term I am switching up a few things that I did in the past when trying to lose weight and have a healthy lifestyle. I am interested in seeing if these changes will help me in losing the weight. As far as what I will be eating I will be sticking with a hybrid of Weight Watchers. This meaning that I will be still tracking my points but with the ‘rules’ below incorporated.

Here are a few of the changes:

  • Eat my biggest meal of the day for breakfast.
    • Even go so far as to eat what I would for dinner for breakfast.
  • Have lunch by 1pm.
  • Do not have any meat or carbs after lunch.
  • Have a light dinner that consists of yogurt, fruit, egg, vegetables.
  • Only drink water and tea.
  • No processed foods.
  • Incorporate juices and smoothies as meals (Like my cleanse!)
